ommentary of the Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry regarding the large-scale terroristic attack occurred in Damascus

On May 10 a double terrorist at occurred on a busy street in the south of Damascus. According to the incoming data, 55 people have been killed and about 400 have been injured. Overwhelming majority of them are civilians, including women and children. As on the information from the Russian Embassy to Syria, there are no Russian citizens among the victims.

We express deep condolences to the relatives and friends of the dead and wish the quickest recovery to those wounded.

We strongly condemn this another bloody crime of terrorists. Nothing can justify death and suffering of innocent people. It has to be admitted that such actions have little in common with the protection of civilian people, which is the matter of permanent talks of the representatives of the uncompromising Syrian opposition and their external protectors.

The landmine war unleashed by terrorists has also affected the UN observers. Their escort accompanied by journalists and Syrian soldiers was attacked by militants on their way to Deraa city on May 9.

The purpose of such savage terroristic acts is obviously to urge the country to a new bloody and extremely dangerous circle of violence, to impede the fulfillment of the Annan Plan, to intimidate the observers of the UN Supervision Mission (UNSMIS). It cannot be allowed. We consider it very important that the UN Supervision Mission where Russia is also taking part in, proceeds in these complicated conditions with carrying out its urgently needed tasks on implementation of the UN/Arab League special envoy K.Annans Plan on peaceful settlement of the Syrian crisis approved by the UN Security Council.
