Current dynamics of Russian-Turkish relations

Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov’s Visit to Turkey

On July 1-2 Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov was on a visit to the Republic of Turkey at the invitation of Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Babajan. Lavrov had a separate conversation with Turkish President Abdullah Gül.

During the talks, key issues in Russian-Turkish relations in the political, trade-and-economic, cultural-humanitarian, and other fields were discussed. Both sides reaffirmed their interest in carrying out further joint steps to take bilateral relations to the level of an advanced multifaceted partnership in accordance with the Political Declaration adopted by the Presidents of Russia and Turkey in 2004. In this connection they underscored the necessity of developing further the summit- and high-level political dialogue and discussed the prospects of next contacts between the leaders of the two countries.

A frank exchange of views took place on a number of pressing regional and international problems, including interaction in the Black Sea Region, developments in the situation within Iraq and the Middle East, around the Iranian nuclear program and Cyprus settlement, and conditions in Transcaucasia.
