Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Ivanov Meets with Turkish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sukru Sina Gurel
A meeting took place on September 11 in New York between Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Igor Ivanov and Turkish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sukru Sina Gurel. The two held a meaningful exchange of views on a broad range of bilateral and international questions.
The main attention was paid to problems in the fight against the present-day challenges and threats to international security that, unfortunately, are currently particularly acute in the Eurasian region, among them international terrorism, militant separatism and religious extremism. The sides' views here fully concur: to effectively counter them is only possible by the combined efforts of the entire world community, including Russia and Turkey. The ministers reaffirmed the resolve to continue to closely cooperate in this field on the basis of the Plan of Action to Develop Cooperation Between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Turkey in Eurasia, signed on November 16, 2001.
A discussion of such topical international problems as the settlement of the conflicts in the Caucasus and the Middle East, the state of affairs in Afghanistan and the situation around Iraq took place. On most of these issues the sides adhere to similar or identical approaches.
In discussing Russian-Turkish bilateral relations, mutual readiness was stressed to promote their further development, for which all the necessary prerequisites are there and, most important - the political will of the leaderships of our countries.
Questions of cooperation in the trade and economic area featured definitely in the talks. Special attention was paid to the course of the realization of the largest project - the trans-Black Sea Blue Stream gas pipeline. Both sides emphasized the priority importance of this project.
The Russian side is generally satisfied with the meeting held, and expects its outcome to give a new impetus to the development of the relations of partnership and cooperation between Russia and Turkey.
