On Russian-Turkish Consultations Concerning a Cyprus Settlement
Russian-Turkish consultations with regard to a Cyprus settlement took place in Ankara on June 21. The Turkish delegation was led by Ugur Ziyal, Turkey's Deputy Foreign Minister. Attending the consultations on the Russian side was the Foreign Minister's special envoy on Cyprus, Vladimir Prygin.
During the exchange of views, the state of affairs in the talks under UN auspices in Nicosia on the Cyprus question and their prospect were considered.
The Russian side expressed hope that the intra-Cyprus dialogue will intensify and produce results, leading to early progress in this direction. Support was declared for the UN Secretary General's Mission of Good Offices in Cyprus, along with the willingness of Russia to continue to help actively the finding, within the scope of relevant Security Council resolutions, of a just, long-term and viable solution to the Cyprus problem that would meet the interests of all the Cypriots and serve the cause of strengthening peace, security and stability in the East Mediterranean.
